Getting Help With My Back

Healing From Rotator Cuff Surgery

by Renee Ruiz

If you are going to be undergoing rotator cuff surgery, then you are going to want to be prepared for what will come next and that is the recovery period. It is going to be very important for you to know that you are prepared for the recovery period and that you know what not to do in order to prevent yourself from destroying all of your surgeon's hard work. Here are some things that you are going to want to know about the recovery period.

Everyone will have a different recovery period

Your recovery can't be compared to anyone else's because each person will have their own experience, heal in their own way, have their own injuries, etc. Therefore, you can't compare your surgery to someone else's in order to try to guess how your recovery will go.

Your shoulder will be immobilized

One of the things you can expect at first is for your shoulder to be immobilized for a while. This is going to require you to wear an arm sling. It's important for you to wear the arm sling only for the duration your doctor told you to. If you continue to baby your arm with the arm sling, then you risk ending up with a condition known as frozen elbow. This happens when you don't use your elbow enough and it freezes up on you. You may be in a sling for anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks and while you are instructed to use the sling, you do not want to use that arm.

Your doctor may give you detailed instructions telling you to wear the sling less and begin using your arm more. Follow the exact instructions they give you regarding the use of your arm and the number of hours per day you should have the sling on still.

Listen to your physical therapist

You will go to a physical therapist during your recovery. It is important for you to have faith in the physical therapist. However, you do also have to tell them when something they are having you do is too painful. They will also give you exercises to do at home, and you want to be sure you do those things at home. By following their instructions the way they tell you to, you can get to a good spot with regards to the healing process. They may also give you tools to use at home, make sure you know how to use them, or get clarification first.
